American Legion members and officers must have a copy of their proof of eligibility on file at the post. If an officer is elected to a district or state department position, proof of eligibility must be provided to the state department before they can be sworn in. Acceptable proof is a DD Form 214.
A DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) is issued to all military personnel upon release. It is the form that proves periods of active military service and service characterization. It is needed for VA care and benefits, proof of eligibility for veterans groups, and burial honors and interment.
If you don’t have or can not locate a copy of your DD Form 214, apply for a replacement now. It can be obtained by making an application on-line with the U.S. National Archives. Learn more
