Efland Cheeks Elementary School has invited area veterans to join hem for their Sixth Annual Take a Vet to School Day. This is in honor of Veterans’ Day. Vets will spend time with a classroom on Thursday, November 8th, 2013. All local and Hillsborough-Mebane area American Legion posts are encouraged to support this event.
How long will you stay in the classroom? This is up to you. Most single-classroom visits have lasted between thirty minutes for kindergarten to an hour for upper grades. Some veterans have stayed longer visiting multiple classrooms or joining a class for lunch.
What do you do? It is up to the veteran. Most visits occur during reading or social studies time. Some veterans have brought objects to show the children, while others have talked about the lessons they learned through their service to our country. The school reports that one veteran made a movie of his service and shared it. The school also has a set of military-themed picture books available for reading aloud, if you would like to read a story to the children. The school is honored to have you join them for for their Veterans’ Day recognition.
Why not join them! Contact Melissa Neal at 919-563-5112 , extension 42900, or Tyonna Martin at extension 4250o for more details and to volunteer!
